Southwark
Category: London boroughs
The London Borough of Southwark is a London borough, located on the south side of the River Thames and part of Inner London.

Its neighbours are the City of London and the London Borough of Tower Hamlets to the north (over the Thames), the London Borough of Lambeth to the west and the London Borough of Lewisham to the east. It is twinned with Langenhagen in Germany.

Southwark got its name in the 9th century but was first settled in the Roman period. Southwark is pronounced "suth-uk" or "suth erk". The emphasis is on the first syllable i.e. suth.

The London Borough of Southwark was formed in 1965 from the Metropolitan Borough of Southwark, the Metropolitan Borough of Camberwell, and the Metropolitan Borough of Bermondsey.
